The Apple appointed this Monday (20) the internal executive John Ternus as its next chief executive, tasking the veteran hardware chief with leading the company after Tim Cookas the iPhone maker prepares for an industry shift driven by artificial intelligence.
Ternus, who joined the Apple in 2001, he recently oversaw the company’s hardware engineering efforts and played a key role in reviving sales of products such as Apple’s Mac computers, which have gained market share in recent years.
Cook, who has led Apple since 2011, will become chairman of the company’s board of directors, Apple said in a statement.
By naming Ternus as chief executive, Apple is transitioning Cook, a supply chain guru who helped build Apple into a global brand that produces hundreds of millions of units a year, to a leader who has long focused on design and products.
Ben Bajarin, chief executive of technology consulting firm Creative Strategies, said Ternus is well-liked within Apple “and will bring renewed energy.”
In a separate statement, Apple said that Johny Srouji, who oversaw Apple’s custom chip and sensor designs, has been named chief hardware officer.
