The Former technology director at OpenAI, Mira Murati, was called to testify in the trial involving billionaire Elon Musk and the company’s co-founder and current CEO, Sam Altman.
In testimony under oath, Murati stated this Wednesday, 6, that Altman lied about the security protocols related to a new model of artificial intelligence. According to her, the executive said that it would not be necessary to subject the system to internal security procedures, claiming that the decision had been approved by the legal department. According to Murati, this information was not true.
Currently heading the startup Thinking Machines Lab, also focused on artificial intelligence, Murati also reported that he faced difficulties during his period at OpenAI because of Altman’s actions.
“I had an incredibly difficult job in a very complex organization,” he said, according to The Verge. “I asked Sam to lead with clarity and not hinder my ability to do my job.”
This isn’t the first time Altman has been accused of lying to colleagues. A recent report in The New Yorker magazine points out that several professionals have left OpenAI for this reason, in addition to criticism that the CEO does not prioritize security in the development of AI systems.
“The problem with OpenAI is Sam himself,” said Dario Amodei, co-founder and CEO of Anthropic and former vice president of research at OpenAI.
A member of the company’s board, interviewed by the publication, also criticized Altman’s behavior. “He doesn’t stick to the truth. He has two characteristics that we rarely see together: a strong desire to please and an almost sociopathic lack of concern about the consequences of deceiving someone,” he said.
The origin of the conflict between Musk and Altman
The relationship between Elon Musk and Sam Altman began more than a decade ago. In 2012, Altman was introduced to the entrepreneur and shared the initial idea for OpenAI.
In 2015, Musk joined the company’s group of co-founders, which also included Altman, Greg Brockman and Ilya Sutskever. Initially, OpenAI was created as a non-profit organization, with the aim of developing advanced artificial intelligence and preventing the concentration of this technology in the hands of large companies like Google.
Over time, however, the need for financing led to the creation of a for-profit structure. Despite today criticizing this change, OpenAI claims that Musk supported the transition before leaving the company in 2019.
Reports indicate that Musk tried to take control of the company and even considered integrating it into Tesla, but the proposal did not move forward. After disagreements with the other founders, he left the project.
Subsequently, OpenAI entered into a partnership with Microsoft and gained global prominence with the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, attracting billions of dollars in investments.
Musk, in turn, founded xAI and began to compete directly with OpenAI, maintaining frequent criticism of Altman, whom he has already called a “crook” and “Scam Altman”, in reference to the English term for fraud.
