How to create a (protected) account for your children on Spotify

SIf you are a Spotify Premium subscriber, you probably value the platform’s algorithm and the service’s recommendation system, which allows you to discover new music within the genres you listen to most.

In this case, it’s also possible that you don’t want this algorithm to be influenced by the music your children listen to. Know, however, that this does not need to happen, as Spotify already offers what it calls Managed Accounts — a feature that, in the near future, may also reach the free version of the platform.

This functionality, in addition to keeping your personal algorithm separate, also gives your children more control over what they want to hear (with appropriate parental controls).

Create a managed account on your cell phone:

Tap your profile photo in the top left corner;
Go to Settings and privacy;
Log in to Account (on Android) or scroll to Account (on iOS) and tap Premium Family;
Under Plan Members, select the option to add members to your plan;
Choose the option Add a listener under 13;
Tap Add account.

It is important to note that, before proceeding, you must confirm that you are the father, mother or legal guardian of the user who will have the account managed. You’ll also need to create a PIN code, enter the youngest user’s name and date of birth, and set up parental controls.

If you already have a young user on Premium Família with an account you want to convert, follow the steps below:

Switch to a managed account:

Tap your profile photo in the top left corner;
Go to Settings and privacy;
Sign in to Account (on Android) or scroll to Account (on iOS) and then select Premium Family;
In the Plan Members section, choose the account you want to change to a managed account;
Next to the Switch to managed account option, tap Get started;
Follow the instructions displayed on the screen.

What to expect from a managed account

It is important to highlight that younger users who use Spotify through these accounts will only have access to music content. They will not be able to access videos, send private messages or participate in Jam (add songs to playing playlists).

Parents will also be able to use parental controls to filter content, including blocking artists they deem inappropriate.

Still, these users will be able to create their own playlists and take advantage of the Wrapped tool, being able to see which artists and genres were most listened to throughout the year.
