Google has started the gradual release of a tool that allows users to change their main Gmail email address without the need to create a new account or lose the history of messages and stored files. The option is now available in Brazil.
Until then, anyone who wanted to change their username (the part before “@gmail.com”) had to open an account from scratch and manually transfer data from services such as Google Drive, Photos and Calendar.
With the update, the old address is automatically converted to an alternative email linked to the same account. This means that the user will continue to receive messages sent to the previous address in the same inbox and can use it to log in to the company’s services.
The change, however, has restrictions. Google limits the creation of new end addresses to once every 12 months, with a historical cap of up to three changes per account (totaling four different addresses over time). Once the new email is created, it cannot be deleted, but the user can revert the main address to the original at any time.
The new feature is being distributed gradually and may not be immediately available to all profiles. Corporate or school accounts (managed by Google Workspace) require authorization from system administrators.

STEP BY STEP
1. Check availability
Go to your Google Account email settings page (myaccount.google.com/google-account-email). In the menu on the left, click on “Personal information”, go to the “Email” section and click on “Google Account Email”. If the “Change Google Account email” option is visible, the feature is already active for your profile.
2. Watch out for side effects
Before proceeding, be sure to make a backup of your data just in case. The change may reset third-party app settings and affect active Chrome Remote Desktop connections. Chromebook users should check operating system-specific instructions. Calendar events created before the migration will continue to display the old email.
3. Choose new name
Enter your desired new username. The system does not accept terms that are already in use by other accounts or that belong to accounts deleted in the past.
4. Confirm the change
Click on “Change email” and confirm with “Yes, change email”. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
