The YouTube blocked access to a World Cup video by the Paraguayan Senate, which addressed in an ordinary session, among other issues, the controversy involving senator Celeste Amarilla and French player Kylian Mbappé.
The General Directorate of Communication of the Upper Chamber of Paraguay published the incident on the social network ‘X’, clarifying through a statement that the measure did not imply “a sanction to the institutional channel of the Chamber of Senators”.
The session was blocked “due to a copyright complaint attributed to FIFA, in accordance with the notice issued by the platform itself”, the statement added.
“As a preliminary matter, the situation would be related to the automatic detection of audiovisual content protected by copyright, within the scope of the parliamentary debate during today’s session (Wednesday), in which references were made to the Football World Cup and audiovisual excerpts related to this event were shown”, added the Paraguayan Senate.
For this reason, the statement explained, the technical team of the Senado TV channel and the General Directorate of Communication are verifying the complaint, with a view to “identifying the segment in question and adopting the necessary measures to re-establish the availability of the recording”.
The statement also clarifies that the programming and broadcasts foreseen in the legislative agenda “will continue to take place normally”.
This Wednesday’s plenary session was marked by a strong confrontation between Amarilla and Mbappé.
Amarilla sparked the controversy on Saturday by stating on social media that Mbappé “instead of his mother’s milk, he sucked coconuts and that the most cultured thing he has ever heard in his life are chimpanzees”, statements that the UN, the French Football Federation and the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, considered racist.
The senator reacted that way to Paraguay’s elimination in the round of 16 of the World Cup against France, with a 0-1 result, decided precisely by a penalty goal from Mbappé, who, according to Amarilla, maintained an arrogant attitude during the game.
The player responded, on the same social network, to the legislator, calling her a “despicable woman and unworthy of the position”.
This Wednesday, after a debate lasting more than five hours, the Paraguayan Senate condemned Amarilla’s “discriminatory and racist expressions” against Mbappé, with a resolution approved by a majority, despite the support of several senators for the legislator.
In the plenary session, the deputy raised her tone again and stated that the player is a “son of a bitch”, highlighting that he refused to greet goalkeeper Orlando Gill at the end of the game.
Furthermore, he highlighted that he refuses to refer to his “dreamed” France as the “land of Mbappé”.
“I refuse to reduce this history, all of this enormous France, all of this enormous cultural, artistic and democratic legacy, to Mbappé,” he stated.
The senator was not alone in her criticism: Senator Yolanda Paredes supported Amarilla’s position and indicated that Mbappé was “racist and xenophobic” against the Paraguayan players, whom, according to her, he tried to “humiliate” during the game.
On the other hand, the president of Congress, Basilio Núñez, from the ruling party, criticized Amarilla’s statements and recommended that she become “master of her silence”.
