Meta’s new image generation model via artificial intelligence can use photos from public Instagram profiles without asking for permission, if the user does not activate a barrier on their account (see below how to do it). Fake images that simulate the appearance of third parties are called deepfakes, an ultra-realistic montage.
Image sharing with the Meta AI robot is active by default and can be used by simply mentioning an open profile on the social network using the “@” command. Private accounts are not integrated into the new service. The service is active in Brazil, according to a note sent to Folha this Wednesday (8).
According to Meta, Muse Image has strict controls and security mechanisms to prevent abuse. “Private accounts and those belonging to users under the age of 18 are automatically deleted, and adult users with public accounts can opt out with just a few clicks,” the company said.
The company says it will take action “against any content that violates our Community Standards.”
In a test, Folha confirmed that it is not possible to create ultra-realistic montages of well-known political figures, such as President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) or presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ). Meta’s chatbot suggests that it can only work with caricatures.
“We have already seen a whole portfolio of damage caused by images altered by AI without consent on social networks in the last year alone”, says a note from digital rights entity Foxglove.
The launch of the new technology will be gradual, which is why some users are still unable to make direct mentions of Instagram profiles. But it is now possible to prevent people from using your public photos for AI image generation.

Instagram also allows the complete deletion of account data at this link. Interested parties can also download all the data from their own account.
In addition to the Muse Spark Image image generation model, Meta also said it has a new video model in development called Muse Video.
