The Nvidia co-founder and current CEO Jensen Huang has become one of the most important figures in technology in recent years. The company, previously known mainly for graphics cards used in video games and computers, gained new prominence by becoming one of the main manufacturers of chips aimed at artificial intelligence training.
Under Huang’s leadership, Nvidia underwent a transformation that took it to the position of the most valuable company in the world. At the time of publication, the company had an estimated market value of US$4.63 trillion, equivalent to around R$25.2 trillion.
Nvidia’s rise has also placed Huang among the richest men on the planet. He currently occupies 9th place on Bloomberg’s billionaires index, with an estimated fortune of US$162 billion, approximately R$882 billion.
The executive’s trajectory, however, began far from the environment of power and wealth that surrounds his name today. According to the biography published on the Britannica website, Huang faced difficulties as a child and started cleaning bathrooms when he was just 9 years old.
Jensen Huang was born on February 17, 1963, in Tainan, Taiwan. After the family’s brief move to Thailand, his parents, a chemical engineer and a primary school teacher, decided to send him to the United States because of the war in the country.
At age 9, Huang went to live with an uncle in Tacoma, Washington state, alongside his older brother. The uncle decided to send the two to a school in Oneida, Kentucky, believing it to be a prestigious religious institution.
In practice, however, the place was a reformatory for young people considered problematic. There, Huang began to perform domestic tasks, such as cleaning bathrooms, while his brother worked on a tobacco plantation. The two also faced episodes of racism and bullying during their time at the institution.
The situation only changed about two years later, when Huang’s parents arrived in the United States and discovered the conditions in which their children lived.
The family then reunited and moved to Portland, Oregon. It was there that Huang continued his studies, a path that would take him to Oregon State University, where he graduated in engineering and met his current wife, Lori Mills.
After completing his degree in 1984, Huang worked at Silicon Valley companies and earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering at Stanford University.
In April 1993, alongside Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem, he founded Nvidia and assumed the role of CEO.
Despite the difficulties faced in the early years, the company grew to become a reference in the manufacture of semiconductors and graphics cards. More recently, the bet on chips aimed at artificial intelligence placed Nvidia at the center of one of the biggest transformations in the technology industry, consolidating the company as a global leader in the sector.
