Amazon announced on Monday (20) a new contribution of up to US$25 billion at artificial intelligence startup Anthropicdeepening the strategic partnership between companies amid the growing global dispute for leadership in AI.
The investment will be made in stages: US$5 billion immediately and another US$20 billion conditional on the achievement of commercial goals. The amount is in addition to around US$8 billion already invested previously by the technology giant in the developer of the Claude model.
As part of the agreement, Anthropic committed to directing more than $100 billion over the next ten years to the use of Amazon’s cloud computing services, reinforcing the company’s role as a leading infrastructure provider to the industry.
The move occurs at a time when Amazon seeks to increase its relevance in the development of its own AI models — such as Nova — while maintaining a dominant position in the supply of computing capacity.
The company forecasts around US$200 billion in investments (capex) this year, with a majority focus on artificial intelligence.
The agreement also reinforces Amazon’s strategy of partnering with big names in the sector. At the beginning of the year, the company had already signaled plans to invest up to US$50 billion in OpenAI, responsible for ChatGPT.
According to Anthropic, the partnership will allow it to significantly expand its computing capacity. The company plans to reach around 1 gigawatt by the end of the year using the Trainium2 and Trainium3 chips, developed by Amazon itself, with plans to reach up to 5 gigawatts in the long term.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said Anthropic’s adoption of the chips demonstrates joint advancement in the development of custom semiconductors. The startup is betting on strengthening infrastructure to accelerate the evolution of models aimed at areas such as programming and design, intensifying competition in the artificial intelligence sector.
