Steam Controller now works on Switch and Android thanks to HID Remapper

Gamer Hardware

The Steam Controller compatibility with the HID project Remapper he was officially confirmed by developer Jacek Fedoryńskiopening the way for the control to use all its commands.

However, before we start with the explanations, the project is already available on GitHub clicking here. The link already provides the most up-to-date files to date.
This new feature includes the free operation of trackpads, touch sensors and accelerometer/gyroscope on devices like Nintendo Switch through a USB dongle configurable. This device works directly on the hardware, without the need for additional software on the host system.

Hardware control and full sensor support

For those who don’t know the project, the HID Remapper It doesn’t just work as a software tool. The device is a USB dongle which is physically positioned between the controller and the PC or console, performing the remapping directly on the hardware.

In this way, the design eliminates the requirement to install drivers or programs on the equipment. The compatible device base includes mice, keyboards and any peripheral that uses the USB HID protocol.

THE latest version of the project shared above, dated May 20, incorporated mapping for the Steam Controller.

To the release notes specify that, in addition to conventional commandsthe implementation recognizes an extensive set of additional sensors and buttons.

Accelerometer datafrom gyroscope and the values of orientation quaternion (ready, filtered and undistorted 3D rotation coordinates for the software) are among the supported readingsnext to touch sensors on analoguegrip, touch and pressure sensors on the trackpads and buttons as L4, R4, L5 and R5.

What is HID Remapper and how does it work

To those on the outside, we highlight that the HID Remapper is a programmable adapter of open source to devices with USB (i.e., almost all), with a wide variety of uses in the accessibility for games.

The device can be used for simple tasks such as remap buttons or change mouse sensitivityor to completely change the types of commands generated: make a joystick work as a mouse or make a keyboard work as a video game controller.

The project supports remapping of buttons and axes, layers, macros and can be expanded with custom behaviors.

The entire operation occurs entirely in hardwarewithout the need for any special software running on the PC. THE configuration is done by the browser and saves directly to the device.

Construction can be carried out equipment such as Raspberry Pi Picomaintaining the accessible design for enthusiasts and developers who want to build their own adapter.

Expansion to consoles and mobile devices

THE current configuration also works with Android and with the Switch 2according to the answers published by Fedoryński. THE operation on PS5 depends on a adapter; the developer cites the Brook’s FGC2 as an interesting option.
