In the early evening of last Tuesday (26), Sony confirmed in an email sent to consumers that decided to close Destruction AllStars online services. The decision drew attention due to its immediate effect, which prevented anyone from participating in farewell matches for the racing game.
The company confirmed that the game’s single player modes remain accessible, but that won’t remain true for long. On November 25th of this year, the company will permanently shut down all servers that still support this part of the experience.
Therefore, anyone who has purchased Destruction AllStars will still be able to access Arcade Mode, but some of its elements may not work correctly. The company also confirmed that, on the same date, will stop selling the title and any digital currency (Destruction Points) associated with it.
What was Destruction AllStars?
While games like Concord and Destiny 2 will be marked as some of the disasters related to the live service category of Sony’s current generation, Destruction AllStars was the first sign that the company’s bets would not work out very well. The title was released on February 2, 2021 as one of the first PlayStation 5 exclusives.
And, even at a time when consumers were thirsty for new features on the platform, the game still only had timid sales. Sony even tried to remedy the situation by including the experience in the PlayStation Plus catalog for two months, but this was not enough to make the experience popular.
Developed by Lucid Games, Destruction AllStars features a cast of 16 characters who must compete in various arenas. The objective is not only to reach the finish line first, but also to collide with opposing vehicles to ensure they get out of the way.
Given that the title was not very popular, the end of its online services should not impact many players. However, it is still strange that Sony only warned about the end when it happened — and, with that, part of the company’s history also disappears from public access.
