The Sony announced this week that it will stop producing physical discs for PlayStation games from January 2028. Now, new information released by the Austrian vehicle ORF Salzburg indicates that this decision has been planned for some time.
According to the publication, Sony Digital Audio Disc Corporation (DADC) has already invested around 30 million euros to transform its disc production factory in Thalgau, Austria, into a unit dedicated to the manufacture of microlenses. Currently, the factory produces around 600 thousand records per day.
“The PlayStation currently represents around 50% of our production volume and, of this total, approximately 20% corresponds to new orders”, explained Sony DADC CEO, Dietmar Tanzer. “In 2028, we will be talking about just 10% of this volume.”
Despite the change, no layoffs are planned at the unit. According to Tanzer, the approximately 300 employees will receive training to work in the production of microlenses.
The information reinforces that Sony does not intend to go back on its decision to abandon the physical format for PlayStation games, even in the face of the negative repercussion generated by the announcement.
From 2028 onwards, the company will focus its efforts exclusively on distributing games in digital format through the PlayStation Store. As a result, expectations are growing that the next generation of the console, the PlayStation 6, will only be compatible with digital games.
