The Hide My Email feature, developed by Apple, was created to protect users’ privacy by allowing them to hide their real email address. However, a vulnerability in the tool could expose users’ real addresses.
According to the website 404 Media, researcher and co-founder of EasyOptOuts, Tyler Murphy, discovered the flaw. Even after informing Apple about the problem, the vulnerability continues to be present in the company’s systems.
Apple even contacted Murphy stating that the error had been corrected through a software update. However, after further tests, the researcher found that the problem persisted. A year after the initial notification, the flaw still had not been resolved.
“We don’t know how big this problem is, but in our testing with volunteers, 100% of addresses created by Hide My Email were still accessible,” Murphy told 404 Media.
The researcher also explained that some websites can relate email addresses to people relatively easily through personal data. Therefore, according to him, “users who use Hide My Email to increase their privacy may be at risk.”
