China tests wind system with giant airship at high altitude

China has tested a high-altitude floating wind energy system that uses a giant airship to generate electricity.

The system uses a 60 mx 40 m helium-filled airship with 12 internal turbines. The structure captures stronger and more constant winds at altitude and converts this force into electrical energy.

The energy generated is transmitted by a smart cable that also anchors the equipment. The system uses AI to adjust altitude and seek ideal wind conditions.

The technology is called stratospheric airborne wind power and has the capacity to generate 3 megawatts. The development is by the company Beijing Lanyi Yunchuan, in partnership with Tsinghua University.

The equipment climbs up to 2,000 meters and keeps the turbines operating with high-altitude winds. Cables anchor and transmit electricity to the ground.

TEST IN SICHUAN AND ADVANTAGES AROUNDED

The system was successfully tested in January in Sichuan province. It rose in about 30 minutes, generated 385 kWh of energy and connected to the electrical grid.

Among the advantages over traditional turbines, the system uses up to 90% less material and does not require concrete foundations and high towers. The list includes low visual and sound impact, as well as simpler transportation, with the possibility of being loaded into containers.

The project is suitable for remote areas, islands and disaster zones. China plans longer tests at higher altitudes, with the aim of helping expand the country’s use of clean energy.
