The block imposed by the White House on Anthropic’s Mythos and Fable 5 models was motivated, at least in part, by the suspicion that a group linked to China had already accessed the Mythos, according to a person familiar with the matter heard exclusively by Semafor American journalism website.
On Friday (13), the Trump administration ordered Anthropic to limit access to the two models to American citizens. The company chose to remove the models from the market completely. According to the Wall Street Journalthe AI block occurred after Amazon CEO Andy Jassy reported it to authorities.
What would make Chinese access dangerous
Mythos was launched in April with access restricted to a select group of companies authorized to use it to identify security vulnerabilities. The objective was to prevent its capabilities from reaching hackers.
If the Chinese government had access to the model, it could pose a risk to American national security. China could also try to copy the system through a process known as distillation – extracting the model’s capabilities to train a competitor.
It is not clear how the White House became aware of the access, which organization obtained the model, or how this occurred.
David Sacks’ version
This Saturday (13), White House AI advisor David Sacks – a declared critic of Anthropic – published on X details about the events that led to the blockade.
According to Sacks, the government received a warning that Fable 5 could be jailbroken. When management notified Anthropic, CEO Dario Amodei reportedly said the flaw did not pose a serious risk and refused to fix it.
“Anthropic prioritized the continued offering of the model to the consumer over security,” Sacks wrote. The advisor stated that the controls were imposed “reluctantly” and that “the ball is in Anthropic’s court.”
Anthropic disputes
An Anthropic spokesperson told Semafor that the White House did not mention Chinese access to Mythos in conversations about jailbreaking and export controls. The company claims to prohibit access to its products from China.
Sacks also said that previous conflicts between Anthropic and the Trump administration — including disputes over state AI regulation and a lawsuit against the Pentagon — did not influence the Mythos decision.
