New data indicates that a significant portion of the use of Grok, an artificial intelligence tool developed by xAI, Elon Musk’s company, is related to the generation of erotic and pornographic content.
The information was released by The Information and shared by Engadget, based on reports from two former xAI employees. According to them, “well over half” of the traffic registered on Grok is destined for the creation of pornographic content, including role-playing conversations aimed at adults (so-called role-play) and a large volume of requests for erotic content.
According to these sources, xAI’s own internal analysis revealed that a “significant proportion of requests” made to the imaging model were related to the creation of pornographic or nude images. Users would have even discovered that it was cheaper to request this type of content through the coding model than using other features of the platform.
The data suggests that a considerable part of xAI’s revenue may be linked precisely to the production of adult content. According to the report, the situation reached such relevant proportions that SpaceX, xAI’s controller, informed potential investors that Grok’s most “controversial” features represented a risk to the business. Still, part of this information would have been omitted from the documentation related to the company’s initial public offering (IPO).
SpaceX would also have reserved around US$530 million (approximately R$2.9 billion) to cover possible legal proceedings arising from the creation of content considered inappropriate.
Internally, the company also faces challenges. One of the first problems would have arisen among the engineers, who found it difficult to develop a system capable of allowing conversations of a sexual nature between adults, while at the same time blocking any attempt to generate content related to child sexual abuse.
Furthermore, some of the employees expressed dissatisfaction when being assigned to work on “Ani”, an avatar with a sexualized appearance and inspired by the anime style, created for Grok.
According to the report, some collaborators were also “embarrassed and disturbed” after Grok generated sexualized images of real people, including minors, published on the social network X.
After the repercussion of the case, the image editing tool began to have restrictions. However, users who pay for the service can still modify photographs with a greater level of freedom.
