Gundam Rogue Orbit was revealed by Bandai Namco as a “surprise” during this year’s June gaming events. The game seemed like an isolated spin-off from the universes of iconic Japanese mechas, but now the producer has revealed that it is part of a new continuity for the franchise: After Apocalypse.
Gundam has a huge variety of media that started in 1979, and there are already several different continuities. After Apocalypse will offer a new entry point into the series, not limited to Gundam Rogue Orbit. In fact, the game will be the continuation of an anime that comes before: Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO.
XARX-ZERO takes place 45 years after chaotic events caused humanity to leave planet Earth to live in space. The protagonist Ray Azumi is part of a generation of people who have never known life before the so-called Apocalypse, and he will become the pilot of the Gundam ZERO.
The events of the series will establish the After Apocalypse universe and set the stage for Gundam Rogue Orbit, which takes place years later in the same universe.
Bandai Namco shows ambition for Gundam Rogue Orbit
The announcement trailer for Rogue Orbit brought a somewhat different aesthetic and setting than what we are used to in the franchise. The CGi animations and the focus on giant monsters made it seem like perhaps Bandai Namco was betting on an isolated experimental project.
However, now it is possible to see a much greater ambition from the producer for the game. By inserting Gundam Rogue Orbit into its own new continuity, even with an anime together, it is clear that the creators hope to attract new fans and possibly transform the IP into more products.

Along with the most recent announcements, Bandai Namco even confirmed that the Gundam Helix, the mecha that stars Rogue Orbit, will gain a model to assemble – the famous Gunpla – in the HG 1/144 standard.
