Instagram launches temporary photo app to rival Snapchat

The Instagram has officially announced the launch of a new app called Instants, focused on quick and spontaneous sharing of photos between friends.

The new feature uses a format already known to users of platforms such as Snapchat and BeReal: temporary images that disappear after being viewed.

According to Instagram, the goal of Instants is to make photo sharing more immediate, casual and private.

Images uploaded by users disappear once opened, but are stored in the profile’s personal history for a year. After that, the user can decide whether to republish the content later on Instagram Stories.

The app also allows friends to react to photos or send private comments, which go directly to the user’s message box.

In addition to working integrated with the Instagram messaging system, Instants also gained an independent version, available as its own application for Android and iPhone.

According to the company, the idea came about after internal tests and requests from users themselves.

“We have been testing Instants for some time and one of the things we heard from people is that they wanted a faster and simpler way to open the camera”, explained the company in an official publication.

The company acknowledged that within the main Instagram app, camera access may be slower than many users would like.

Instants will also have tools similar to those already on Instagram, including options to mute or block users.

In addition, the application will have restrictions to prevent screenshots and recordings of the cell phone screen while viewing temporary photos.

Meta ended end-to-end encryption on Instagram messages, allowing access to the content of conversations through the platform. Change reignites debate about privacy, content moderation, use of data for AI and pressure from authorities for greater control over private messages.
