With the presence of the president of Sebrae Nacional, Rodrigo Soares, Sebrae managers from several states, the board of directors of Sebrae Rio and artisans from Parintins (AM), the new exhibition of the Sebrae Reference Center for Brazilian Crafts (CRAB) was opened yesterday, at Praça Tiradentes: Boi-Bumbá de Parintins – from Brincar ao Futuro. The show by Grupo Kboclos from Manaus, which plays boi-bumbá tunes, livened up the party that took place on the boardwalk in front of CRAB.
Rodrigo Soares toured the Parintins exhibition, which occupies eight rooms on the first floor; he knew
the Tátil Gallery, a new space at the Reference Center, with some works reproduced in 3D and subtitles in Braille, for the visually impaired public, and participated in presentations in the areas of Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation, Afroentrepreneurship and CRAB Education in the auditorium. The president of Sebrae also opened, in the afternoon, the meeting of the CRAB Governance Committee.
At 7pm, the Boi-Bumbá de Parintins exhibition was opened by the director of Sebrae/RJ and member of CRAB, Sérgio Malta, who recognized the Parintins Festival as a globally celebrated movement. “It is important to remember that this whole great reality comes from talented hands, from men and women who produce, create and innovate throughout the year, keeping one of the most beautiful cultural expressions in Brazil alive”, he assesses.

The president of Sebrae, Rodrigo Soares, was also present at the launch, remembering that the exhibition project was only possible with the help of a large team of employees from the institution. “With this exhibition, you will learn about the knowledge and possibilities of the Parintins Festival. We from the Sebrae team want to remind everyone that crafts are a permanent opportunity to generate income, innovation and technology for our lives.”
Despite her absence at the event, the superintendent of Sebrae Amazonas, Ananda Carvalho, left a thank you. “It is an immense pride and happiness to be able to present to Brazil and the world the strength of the culture of Parintins and the entrepreneurial spirit of the people of Parintins”, she said in a note.
The great exhibition on the Parintins Festival, as famous as Carnival and the Círio de Nazaré among the country’s folkloric festivals, is organized by CRAB in partnership with Sebrae Amazonas and exhibits pieces that cover everything from the popular origins of the game to the allegories presented at the Bumbódromo. A highlight is the set of 300 Mini Boi dolls, 150 of which are Caprichoso (blue), and 150 are Garantido (red). The objects portray the cultural rivalry of Tupinambarana Island, in Amazonas.

According to curator Rozana Trilha, the exhibition is structured into three thematic areas: “The first recognizes Boi-Bumbá as a celebration of Brazilian plurality. The second places Parintins and the Amazon as the center of national creative power. The third focuses on the future of the party, exploring creative economy, innovation and sustainability projects.” Rozana further explained that the proposal is to show that tradition can transform without losing its identity.
In addition to the dolls, the public will see table allegories, representations of characters such as Pajé and Cunhã-Poranga, and seven life-size sculptures of the Enchanted of the Forest. The exhibition also uses materials left over from presentations, transforming waste into new artisanal products, in accordance with the Parintins Criativo: From Festival to the Future project. Sergio Malta, Development Director at Sebrae Rio, stated that the exhibition invites visitors to recognize themselves as guardians of this Brazilian cultural wealth.
The Mini Boi (or Miniature Boi) of Parintins is a playful and children’s version of the famous Parintins Festival. Children and young people take part in the rivalry between Boi Garantido and Boi Caprichoso, presenting articulated dolls and small allegories on tables, recreating the grandiose performances of the Bumbódromo. The artisans who create the allegories and reproduce the festival in miniature will in the future work at the Festival dos bois grandes in the Parintins arena.

Official opening
Typical dishes from Amazonian cuisine were served to the evening’s guests, such as pirarucu de casaca, tambaqui minced meat with banana farofa and tucupi broth. A large stage, in the center of the promenade in front of CRAB, welcomed the group Kaboclos, which plays boi-bumbá tunes, including classic hits by bois Caprichoso and Garantido.
About CRAB
CRAB was created with the mission of promoting national crafts and contributing to improving the image of handmade products in Brazil. “The objective is to increase the market value of this important and beautiful popular art through the strategic repositioning of its production chain”, explains the Development Director of Sebrae Rio, Sergio Malta.
The CRAB project began in 2008 and took definitive shape in 2016, with the completion of its architectural complex, the result of the integration of three historic and listed buildings, located in Praça Tiradentes, in the center of Rio de Janeiro.
Since its opening, the space has already hosted 39 shows and exhibitions; restructured its collection of around 2 thousand works and established the Guided Visits Programthe Educational Program and the Regional Craft Shows Program. The entire space has a modern structure that coexists with the construction pattern of the 18th century.
