The PlayStation announced that it will stop producing physical discs for new games released on its consoles from January 2028. The decision was announced this Wednesday (1st), in a publication on the brand’s official blog, and marks another step by Sony towards the digital market.
According to the company, after this date, new games for PlayStation consoles will only be available in digital format, through the PlayStation Store or through retailers that sell codes and digital versions.
Sony Interactive Entertainment states that the change follows consumer preference and the broader movement in the entertainment industry, increasingly focused on digital consumption.
“As consumer preferences and the entertainment industry continue to move away from physical discs towards digital, production of physical discs for all new games released on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting in January 2028,” the company said.
The company also highlighted that the transition will not affect games already released on physical media nor titles that will be released on disc before January 2028.
“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs,” PlayStation said.
The decision reinforces speculation about Sony’s plans for its next generation of consoles. With the end of discs for new releases, the possibility is growing that the future PlayStation 6 will reach the market without support for physical media, although the company has not yet confirmed details about the device.
On the same day, PlayStation also announced changes to digital stores for old consoles. Starting in August 2026, the company will begin shutting down the PlayStation Store on PS3 in select markets. Mexico, Honduras and Nicaragua will be the first countries affected.
Other countries in Latin America and the Middle East will go through the same process at the end of 2026. In the rest of the world, the PlayStation Store for the PS3 and PS Vita will close in July 2027.
With the closure of stores on these consoles, users will no longer be able to purchase new digital content through these devices. Sony states, however, that players will continue to be able to download previously purchased content for an indefinite period of time.
The company justified the measure by stating that the PS3 and PS Vita can no longer keep up with the updates required by modern digital commerce and payment processing systems.
The two decisions indicate an important change in PlayStation’s strategy. On the one hand, the brand is starting to close down purchasing services on old platforms. On the other hand, it prepares the ground for a future in which new games will only be distributed in digital format.
