The The British government will announce this Monday (15th) a ban on the use of social networks by children under 16, as well as communication in game chats.

The measures taken by Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government will go further than those adopted by Australia, a pioneer in restricting the use of social networks by minors, according to information released by the British press, and will include the impossibility of surfing the networks after 8:30 pm for those under 18.

The networks that will be affected are, in principle, the same ten as in Australia: TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Reddit, Facebook, X, Threads, Snapchat, Twitch and Kick.

The WhatsApp messaging platform will not be among those targeted, as British authorities consider it to have some educational value.

The Starmer Government assured today that this ban on networks for minors is supported by nine out of ten people, according to an online consultation carried out in the last two weeks.

The remaining details of the ban, as well as the technical measures to implement them, will be made public on Monday.

Since March, the British Government has carried out a public consultation on possible restrictions on the use of social networks by minors, before deciding what measures to implement.
