Halo Infinite multiplayer receives “surprise” update with new co-op mode

This week, Microsoft released an unexpected update for Halo Infinite’s multiplayer mode, which brings a new style of play. Players accustomed to the Firefight co-op mode will now be able to try out a new style within it called Gauntlet.

Firefight Gauntlet incorporates roguelite elements and randomized maps into Halo Infinite’s co-op multiplayer. The matches are divided into arenas with hordes of enemies and a Champion, and players need to defeat this most powerful enemy to move on to the next arena.

For each Champion defeated, the team will have 30 seconds in a hub to make upgrades, depending on the points they accumulated in the previous arena. Each player can improve their damage, recovery, stamina or speed, and each of these four options has different levels of improvements.

The new mode’s arenas use Firefight maps and appear randomly. The types of enemies and champions that appear in each arena are also randomized.

The new multiplayer gameplay style for Halo Infinite also introduces an AI aggression system. Players eliminating more enemies will become their main target, while it is possible to lessen this focus on themselves within a Shroud Screen.

The surprise of the update comes because in November 2025, after four years of Halo Infinite, Halo Studios (343 Industries) announced that it would no longer be offering support for multiplayer with new content. The game entered “maintenance” mode, only receiving bug fixes, stability improvements and vulnerability fixes.
