The changes recently announced by Google for its search engine did not please some users, who started looking for alternatives to the technology giant’s platform. Among them, DuckDuckGo once again gained prominence for prioritizing user privacy.
According to the Engadget website, the increase in app downloads began shortly after Google I/O 2026, an event held between May 19th and 20th, when the company presented new artificial intelligence functions that should transform the search experience on the platform.
The changes include features that alter both the appearance of the search engine and the way results are displayed, with greater integration of AI-generated responses.
After the announcement, DuckDuckGo recorded significant growth in the number of installations in the United States. According to the company, the application had an average increase of 18.1% in downloads for six consecutive days. The peak occurred on May 25, when installations grew 30.5%. Most new users use iOS devices.
The growing interest in the search engine was also driven by statements from the company’s founder and CEO, Gabriel Weinberg, who criticized Google for implementing artificial intelligence features without offering users the possibility of deactivating them.
“Google is imposing artificial intelligence without letting people choose not to use it,” Weinberg said. “As a result, the results are getting worse, not better. We want to be the platform that puts users in control and lets them decide how much artificial intelligence they want to use. That’s why we’re seeing so many people switching to DuckDuckGo this week,” he said.
