A few days after the scare caused by an air leak at the International Space Station (ISS), one of the astronauts took images of an aurora australis. The images were taken by NASA astronaut Jessica Meir, part of the Crew-12 mission and Expedition 74 on the Space Station.
Along with the images, Meir said that a lot is happening at the station and that, “fortunately, we are all safe and witnessed a spectacular aurora australis yesterday, thanks to a recent solar event.”
Meir also published a timelapse of the aurora. “Unlike the aurora I saw previously, this one danced and snaked directly below us, providing quite a spectacle. I am in awe of this ethereal and emotionally evocative phenomenon,” the astronaut wrote in her post.
Last Friday (5), NASA placed five astronauts on alert with the possibility of withdrawing from the station. While on alert, a Russian team also present on the ISS seeks to repair an air leak in the orbital laboratory section.
At that moment, members of Crew-12 and American astronaut Christopher Williams were instructed to go to the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, attached to the station, and wear spacesuits as a precautionary measure.
At the same time, Russian cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikayev were trying to locate the source of the leak, which was in the Zvezda service module, one of the main components of the Russian segment of the ISS.
In 27 years of operation, there has never been a need to evacuate the station.
