As published by the The Verge This Friday (26), Google announced a new gaming mode that will arrive on Android 17 in the coming months, aimed at smartphones with a folding screen. The new feature will allow half of the display to be used as a virtual control, while the other will display the game, expanding the possibilities for titles compatible with physical controls.

The feature was presented as an alternative for users who want to play without relying on Bluetooth controls or attachable accessories. The proposal is to offer a solution integrated into the operating system, capable of reproducing commands from a conventional gamepad.

Based on the information disclosed, the mode can be activated before or after opening a compatible game and will be automatically disabled if a physical controller is connected to the device.

The new function will use a virtual control implemented in the operating system itself to simulate the commands of a physical gamepad. This means that games compatible with traditional controls will be able to normally recognize commands sent through the interface displayed on the screen.

Among the available controls will be a digital directional pad, two virtual analog sticks, buttons A, B, X and Y, as well as triggers, top buttons, commands corresponding to the clicks of the analog sticks and the start button.

The system will also allow adjustments to the control interface. The user will be able to choose different positions for the analog sticks, change the size of the buttons and decide whether the tactile feedback will remain activated or not.

As explained by Mishaal Rahman, an employee in Google’s Android department, in post on Reddit the intention is to expand the gaming possibilities on foldable devices without requiring additional accessories. “Android lets you play a wide variety of games anywhere. While touch controls work great in many titles, some games provide a better experience when used with physical controls.”

According to Rahman, carrying a Bluetooth controller or attachable models is not always practical. For this reason, the company developed a solution integrated with Android 17 specifically aimed at foldable cell phones. “The problem is that carrying a Bluetooth controller or an attachable gamepad everywhere is not always convenient. We want to fill this gap.”
