Apple M5 uses AI to increase FPS in games and reinforces its bet on Apple Silicon

Emphasis Gamer

The M5 Max processor, present in the MacBook Pro, showed promising results for the power of generating frames through AI in non-native games on the system. Neural accelerators are Apple Silicon’s next big bet, and so far they have pleased users who still hope to play on Mac.

A user who signs in as Particular_Switch_21 on Reddit went to the forum to report his configuration experience, using Apple’s Metal 4 API. According to him, the image we see below is of Resident Evil Requiem running on his MacBook Pro with M5 Max at a resolution of 3,024 x 1,890 without the use of upscaling.

He states that the settings are at maximum and the DLSS frame generation helped keep the game between 60 and 70FPS. In the responses to the post he acknowledges that this results in latency, but says that in his personal experience it was not problematic to play.

What really draws attention to the experiment is that Resident Evil Requiem does not yet have a native port for macOS, so it needs to run via emulation on Apple’s system. It’s the kind of thing that has an impact on performance, and generating quality frames could prove to be a shortcut to guaranteeing more games on the Mac without depending on the decisions of producers.

Apple should continue betting on neural processing

The expectation for the next generation of Apple M7 processors is that the company will redouble its commitment to AI, bringing improvements to the neural accelerators. Leaks already indicate a 56% increase in memory bandwidth, rising to 240GB/s, which should take the hardware’s frame generation capacity further.

Frame generation is not the same thing as native performance, but the current trend seems increasingly focused on performance improvements through AI, even for dedicated graphics cards, then even more so for integrated solutions like Apple processors.
