The federal government launched the free public streaming platform “Tela Brasil”, created to expand the population’s access to national cinematographic and audiovisual productions. The initiative is coordinated by the Ministry of Culture.
According to the ministry, the platform represents the first federal audiovisual streaming service in the country, bringing together in a single environment historical works, contemporary productions, educational content and collections from federal cultural institutions.
The debut catalog features more than 550 Brazilian productions, including 267 short films, 139 feature films, 85 medium-length films or television films and 64 serial works. The productions cover the period between 1910 and 2025 and offer an overview of the history and diversity of Brazilian audiovisual.
According to the Ministry of Culture, the public will also have access to 19 works that represented Brazil in the Oscar competition, as well as productions aimed at children and young people, musicals, historical records and titles awarded at national and international festivals.
Among the highlights of the catalog are “Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol”, “Terra em Transe”, “Barravento” and “O Pátio”, by Glauber Rocha; “A Hora da Estrela”, by Suzana Amaral; “Xica da Silva”, by Cacá Diegues; “Central do Brasil”, by Walter Salles; and “City of God”, by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund.
The Tela Brasil platform is the result of an initiative by the Ministry of Culture in partnership with the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL) and was launched during Rio2C 2026, held in Cidade das Artes, in Rio de Janeiro.
The ceremony was attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the Minister of Culture, Margareth Menezes. During the event, a Technical Cooperation Agreement was also signed between the Ministry of Culture and Empresa Brasil de Comunicação to expand the supply of national content and strengthen public policies aimed at the audiovisual sector.
At first, Tela Brasil will only be available in the web version, through the official portal, with access via login on the Gov.br platform.
Versions for Android and iOS must be made available within 30 days of the official launch.
