NIt is not uncommon to see executives at large companies receive performance-based bonuses, usually linked to goals such as profit, share price appreciation and other financial indicators.
However, documents released by SpaceX during the procedures for an initial public offering show that one of the company’s owner, Elon Musk’s bonuses, is related to long-term objectives — more specifically the future creation of a human colony on Mars.
According to Bloomberg, the colony planned by SpaceX on Mars would need to reach one million inhabitants for Musk to be entitled to a bonus of one billion shares, divided into 15 equal installments. Another condition to fully release the prize is that SpaceX reaches a market value of 7.5 trillion dollars.
Also according to the publication, Musk spent the last year strengthening his control over the company and spent 1.4 billion dollars buying shares belonging to current and former SpaceX employees. As a result, according to the documents released, he now holds 85.1% of the company’s voting power.
A glimpse into the future of SpaceX
SpaceX has officially started the necessary procedures for its long-awaited listing on the stock exchange, providing investors with information about the paths it intends to follow in the coming years.
In addition to the financial details and growth projections that make the company attractive to investors, Elon Musk took the opportunity to present his vision for the company’s future — which includes travel not only to space, but also within the Earth itself.
According to Business Insider, one of SpaceX’s projects involves a cargo and passenger transport system using the SpaceX Starship rocket, capable of traveling between two points on Earth in less than an hour.
Despite the potential, the company recognizes that the project faces major technical, economic and regulatory challenges, including issues linked to the legislation of different countries.
SpaceX, however, demonstrates even more ambition regarding space travel. The company says it has plans to expand space tourism and allow more people to travel to space and experience zero gravity.
Mars continues to be a central part of the company’s plans. SpaceX intends to transport cargo and passengers to the “Red Planet”, produce energy there and even build factories and industrial facilities that transform Mars into a production center.
In addition to Mars, the company also highlighted projects to create factories on the Moon and in Earth’s orbit, in addition to the possibility of extracting minerals and other valuable resources from asteroids.
