The import volume received by Brazil reached 28 million units in Junesurpassing more than 100% that registered in the same month of the previous year.
The increase coincides with the end of call charges “blouse fee”, announced by the government in May. The data, released by Federal Revenuerepresent a record since the beginning of the historical series of measuring these values, in 2023.
The total value of remittances in the period amounted to US$574 millionthe equivalent of almost R$3 billion at the current price. The growth in relation to June of last yearwhen the country received more than 13 million orders, was 107%.
The impact of historical volume on imports
The peak observed in June exceeds the numbers recorded in 2023 and early 2024. In that period, before the implementation of the “blouse fee” with a 20% tax rate on purchases up to US$50, consumers also accelerated purchases on international websites.
During that period, an unusual flow of goods was generated. In October 2023, for example, the volume was no more than 8 million orders.
The current level more than doubled in one year. The comparison base for June of the previous year, with 13 million remittances, was already considered high. Now, the 28 million units consolidate an escalation that has no parallel in official records.
Pressure from the textile sector and the context of American tariffs
THE removal of the “blouse tax” is criticized by representatives of the national industry. THE textile sectordirectly affected by the increase in exports to the United States taxed at 25% in the context of the Donald Trump government’s tariffs, assesses that the end of the charge on international orders further worsens the damage to Brazilian traders.
Finally, we emphasize that national businesspeople defend the review of the measure and urge the government to reevaluate the decision.
THE Provisional Measure dealing with the topic needs to be voted in the National Congress until September. Otherwise, will lose its validity.
