Mighty Cuphead Adventure was made to run on Master System hardware

During the opening ceremony of Summer Game Fest 2026, Studio MDHR announced that it is already working on a new hand-animated game in the style of Cuphead. However, the studio’s next work will be Mighty Cuphead Adventure, which was designed to run directly on the Master System hardware.

According to the company, the new title was programmed in Assembly and will respect the limitations of SEGA’s 8-Bit console. This means that it will only have 32 colors in total and pixelated visuals, but it will not lose the challenging features and visual style characteristic of the series.

The developer also guarantees that Mighty Cuphead Adventure will be compatible with modern PCs and all major desktop consoles. At the same time, she prepares the launch of a physical cartridge which can be used directly on the Master System.

What do we know about Mighty Cuphead Adventure?

In addition to confirming the retro focus of Mighty Cuphead Adventure, Studio MDHR also released some gameplay snippets from the game. It will be a sidescroller with simple visuals, but which maintains the same 1930s animation aesthetic seen in the original game.

Fans should also look forward to two-player multiplayer support, as well as the return of some iconic bosses. However, so far the company has not confirmed information such as the number of phases, price or the consoles that will receive the project.

At the same time, she stated that Mighty Cuphead Adventure will not take the focus away from the sequel to the original gamegiven the fact that it was developed by a small team. The developer’s intention is to pay homage to the games of the past and an era that made its members fall in love with this universe.

The first title in the franchise was released in 2017, initially as an Xbox exclusive. It proved to be a huge sales success that led to expansions, versions for other platforms and even the animation The Cuphead Show!, which arrived on Netflix in February 2022.
