The federal government raised YouTube’s rating from 14 to 16 after a technical note highlighted the presence of content considered inappropriate.
Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) reclassified YouTube to 16 years old this Tuesday (5). The measure is part of the ECA Digital regulation, a law approved last year to reinforce the protection of children and adolescents in the online environment.
New age group works as an alert and does not automatically block access to the platform. The indicative classification serves to guide families and users about the most frequent type of content on the service, without preventing videos from being broadcast.
YouTube can appeal the reclassification within ten days after publication in the Official Gazette of the Union.
WHAT CHANGES WITH ECA DIGITAL
ECA Digital updates the Child and Adolescent Statute to create protection rules in the digital environment. Among the points mentioned in the material are online security measures, data protection, risk prevention and accountability of platforms for illegal content and abusive practices.
The law provides for requirements such as age verification and safer versions for minors in certain services. The text prohibits self-declaration of age in services restricted to those over 18 years of age and provides for social networks to offer versions without prohibited content or targeted advertising.
Norma also deals with betting, pornography, marketplaces and games with reward boxes. Non-compliance may result in fines of R$10 per registered user, up to a limit of R$50 million, in addition to the possibility of temporary or definitive suspension of activities, depending on the infraction.
National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) was transformed into a regulatory agency with responsibilities linked to the statute. The law also requires moderation reports from platforms with more than 1 million registered children and adolescents.
OTHER PLATFORMS HAD ALREADY BEEN RECLASSIFIED
The government had already revised the indicative classification of other applications and social networks at the end of April. According to G1, TikTok and Kwai are now 16 years old.
Survey cited by Estadão includes changes to more services, such as LinkedIn, Pinterest and Snapchat. The newspaper also pointed out that Quora was reclassified to 18 years old and that some platforms maintained the ages already indicated, such as Instagram (16 years old) and X (18 years old).
