On its opening weekend in American cinemas, the animated film “Toy Story 5” earned around US$160 million, or R$825 million, at the box office. The number surpasses the US$ 131.7 million, or R$ 678.5 million, of “Super Mario Galaxy”, and makes the film the biggest debut of the year in the country.
On Friday alone (19), the film grossed US$ 71 million, already securing second place on the list of biggest openings in the history of animation – behind only “The Incredibles 2”, which in 2018 made US$ 72.2 million upon arrival in theaters, reaching US$ 182.7 million over the entire weekend.
The numbers also surpass those of “Toy Story 4”, which opened in June 2019, grossing US$120.9 million, and those of the other three films in the Pixar franchise.
In the new film, Woody, Jessie, Buzz and the other toys face an unprecedented challenge: the screen. While looking for a friend for Bonnie, Jessie comes across Lilypad, a tablet. Throughout the film, the cloth cowgirl remembers past traumas while trying to preserve the imagination and purity of the little girl’s childhood.
The new film is directed by Andrew Stanton, a veteran of the franchise, with co-direction by Kenna Harris. To Folha, the co-director stated that each “Toy Story” released by Pixar accompanied changes within the company and in the world.
“When I was growing up, it was a lot simpler. They (the toys) are feeling this real-time nostalgia for what the previous movies were like.”
In the United States, “Toy Story 5” shared its opening weekend with Neon’s horror film “Leviticus”, with an expected $3 million, and “The Death of Robin Hood”, starring Hugh Jackman and directed by Michael Sarnoski, with an expected $2.5 million.
