SAccording to unidentified sources, the United States Department of Commerce informed, through a letter sent to Anthropic, that it would remove restrictions on the use of the Mythos 5 model for a selected list of companies and federal agencies. Access to the system had been suspended for almost two weeks for national security reasons.
The letter does not clarify what the future of the Fable 5 model will be, a less advanced version of the Mythos, which had been made publicly available on the Claude platform and also had access suspended.
“I have determined that the necessary safeguards are in place to allow certain trusted partners to access Claude Mythos 5,” US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said in the document.
According to the American government, Anthropic demonstrated “significant advances” after several days of negotiations motivated by concerns that the company’s most advanced models could be used in cyber attacks.
The news was released on Friday, the same day that OpenAI presented the new GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna models, also with access restricted to partners approved by the United States government.
In a statement, OpenAI took a stance against the idea that government approval “becomes the standard in the long term”, arguing that it “deprives users, developers, companies, cybersecurity professionals and global partners of the best tools available”.
On June 13, Anthropic suspended public access to its most advanced AI models to comply with an export control directive that requires blocking access by foreign nationals, citing national security reasons.
According to the company, to comply with the order prohibiting use outside the United States or by foreigners within the country, it was necessary to completely block access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all customers.
In a statement, Anthropic stated that the American government did not provide specific details about why the new artificial intelligence systems would pose a risk to national security and apologized to customers for the service interruption.
“As we have publicly stated, we believe that the government must have the ability to prevent unsafe developments within a process that is transparent, fair, clear and based on technical facts. This action is not in line with these principles”, declared the company.
The suspension occurred a few days after Anthropic made the Fable 5 model available to Claude subscribers, presented as the company’s most advanced in several capacity tests and considered far superior to the Opus models.
