Users are furious about YouTube removing the Subscriptions tab

Add Android Authority on Google:

  • YouTube’s latest mobile interface update moves the Subscriptions tab from the bottom bar to a top header swipe gesture.
  • The redesign gives prime real estate to the Shorts and Upload buttons while stripping category filters, triggering widespread backlash over ruined muscle memory and wasted potential.
  • Affected Android users can bypass the controversial new layout by using launcher app shortcuts to reach their subscriptions feed directly.

Google is rolling out a major redesign for the YouTube app on Android and iOS, but it isn’t going down smoothly with long-time users. As we noted when YouTube began overhauling its homepage with custom feeds, the platform has been aggressively restructuring navigation around short-form video (Shorts) and algorithmic exploration. The latest wave of changes, however, has also removed the dedicated Subscriptions tab from the bottom navigation bar after nearly a decade, exiling it to a header swipe gesture at the top of the interface, and users are really mad about it.

There are so many Reddit threads and comments from users pushing back against the removal of the Subscriptions tab from the bottom bar. So many users are bewildered by YouTube’s decision to banish what is arguably its most critical utility tab. In its place, YouTube has elevated the Shorts and Upload (+) buttons right into prime thumb swipe zones, and users argue they don’t need these tabs to sit in such a prominent spot.

What do you think of YouTube replacing the bottom Subscriptions tab with a top pill?

Hate it. Put the Subscriptions tab back where it belongs = 100%

Don’t mind it. Swiping between feeds feels fine to me. = 0%

I like it. The UI feels cleaner and less cluttered. = 0%

Haven’t received it yet. My app still has the old navigation bar. = 0%

The sentiment among users isn’t just resistance to an aesthetic change. For many, it’s genuine frustration over broken muscle memory and degraded usability. Reddit user v0id_user summed up the frustration:

Another Reddit user noted how reflexive tapping now triggers the wrong action:

The new UI was driving me insane, I think I opened my camera 10 times today trying to open subs section

Users are also pointing out that most of them use YouTube for consumption, so removing the Subscriptions tab while retaining the Upload button makes little sense for usability:

Beyond moving the Subscriptions tab, the update also strips away the familiar category filters that let users quickly isolate Unwatched, Today, or Live content. Instead, users are dumped into an unorganized, algorithm-heavy feed with prominent interaction icons.

YouTube seems to have just flipped the server-side switch for a wide rollout, which is why we’re seeing a huge outcry over this change even though it was announced last month.

Going through all the angry comments, YouTube’s current priorities feel increasingly disconnected from viewers who simply open the app to watch creators they deliberately subscribed to. For now, if you’re stuck with the new UI, you can still access the legacy feed using our quick Subscriptions tab workaround via Android’s long-press app shortcuts.
