The WhatsApp is testing a new way to allow users to store their conversations more securely. According to the WABetaInfo website, the company is working on developing its own cloud storage service.
Currently, chat backup depends on the cell phone’s operating system. On Android devices, data is saved on Google Drive, while iPhone users use iCloud.
According to information released by WABetaInfo, the new functionality will allow you to store conversations directly in WhatsApp’s own cloud, which should be launched in the future with end-to-end encryption.
Images shared by the website indicate that, in the case of Android, users will be able to choose between the platform’s own service and Google Drive. The expectation is that the storage offered by WhatsApp includes around 2 GB free.
There is also an indication that the company may offer paid plans, with around 50 GB of storage for approximately US$0.99.
There is still no official forecast for the launch of the new feature, but the expectation is that new details will be released as the functionality approaches the final testing phase.

The change was reported in the platform’s Help Center and is part of a review of the technical requirements necessary for the service to operate. Users with affected devices have already started to be notified about the need to update the system or replace the device.
