Brazil has sought to consolidate itself as a global hub for large data centers, taking advantage of affordable renewable energy and abundant water resources to attract investment from companies in the United States and TikTok, from China.
Although the Brazilian government is trying to resume the tax incentive program for the sector, called Redata, Tito Costa, revenue director at Tecto, stated that the initiative would be useful, but not decisive for the company’s investment plans.
Part of Tecto’s strategy is to offer corporate services, operating in the “enterprise” segment in regions that are still little explored in the country.
“Today, most companies need to move to São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, the main data center hubs in Brazil, to have access to very high quality structures. We see great potential in expanding investments outside these axes”, said Costa.
Among the company’s projects are a 20 megawatt (MW) data center in Porto Alegre (RS) and a 200 MW unit in Santana de Parnaíba, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo.
These new units, along with three other data centers that will be announced soon, will add to a portfolio of seven facilities already operational, located between Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza, in Brazil, and Barranquilla, in Colombia.
The investments come after Tecto separated last year from V.Tal, a telecommunications infrastructure company also supported by funds from BTG, which operates 26 thousand kilometers of submarine cables and 450 thousand kilometers of terrestrial network.
