Amazon closes purchase of Globalstar with an eye on cellular satellite connections

Business Emphasis

The Amazon has closed on the purchase of Globalstar in a $11.57 billion deal, which will allow its network of low-orbit (LEO) satellites to offer direct connections to devices, in a move to compete with Elon Musk’s Starlink.

Globalstar shareholders will be able to choose to receive US$90 per share in cash or 0.3210 shares of Amazon common stock for each Globalstar share, with value capped at US$90 per share.

Under the agreement, Amazon will acquire Globalstar’s current satellite operations, infrastructure and assets, including spectrum licenses for mobile satellite services (MSS), with global authorizations.

Amazon LEO will deploy its own system of direct-to-device satellites starting in 2028.

“Combining Globalstar’s spectrum and consolidated MSS capabilities with the scale, performance and reach of Amazon LEO will enable Amazon to deliver seamless connectivity to consumer, enterprise and government customers around the world,” the companies said in a statement.

The transaction is expected to be completed in 2027.

Amazon also reached an agreement with Apple to enable satellite services for the iPhone and Apple Watch.
