With the recently announced ROG Xbox Ally X20, ASUS has brought two significant changes to the notebook. Firstly, the screen was enlarged, albeit slightly. The 7-inch IPS display has moved to a 7.4-inch OLED with a 120Hz refresh rate and the same 1080p resolution.
The panel has 600 nits of brightness in SDR and peaks at 1400 nits in HDR, surpassing even the Lenovo Legion Go 2, although both are VESA DisplayHDR TrueBlack 1000 certified. In addition, the Xbox Ally X20 is compatible with Dolby Vision.
Like the Legion Go 2, it also has an improved variable refresh rate (VRR), which reaches 30Hz instead of the original Ally’s 48Hz. And this can provide a smoother gaming experience, considering the processor cannot reach 48fps by default.
Speaking of which, the processor is the same as the original Xbox Ally X: AMD Z2 Extreme, with 24GB of 8000MT/s RAM and 1TB of storage. And as a result of the changes, the notebook is slightly larger to accommodate the changes: 9mm wider, half a millimeter thicker and 41 grams heavier.
Second Change
The other significant change was the end of the “Library” button, which not only disappeared, but was replaced by a new “Action” button. This new button takes a screenshot with a single press or records a recording with a long press, as normally happens with current console controls.
ABXY buttons now sit flush with the housing when pressed. The upper buttons have been repositioned and have a longer, quieter travel for better tactile response. And the Xbox button now lights up green.
Additionally, the fans have been slightly redesigned to channel more cool air through the chassis, reducing the temperature of the touchscreen.
Availability
The least pleasant part is that ASUS does not allow you to purchase the console separately. The console was announced in the ROG XBOX Ally X20 bundle at Computex, being a special 20th anniversary edition of its line of gaming laptops.
As such, it will come exclusively as part of a bundle with a pair of the expensive R1 glasses from ASUS and Xreal at US$849 (R$4,279.38), which cost about the same as a US$1,000 Xbox Ally X (R$5,040.50) alone.
And, as the company has not yet released the price of the package, there is a suspicion that this is to help alleviate the high price of the laptop. Just last week, we reported an increase of up to US$300 on the SteamDeck, however, this did not stop the portable from selling out in some places.
With the rise in components due to the AI boom, prices are expected to remain high for some time.
