In an interview with the Nintenderos website, director Naoki Hamaguchi explained that expanding the character’s presence is something that was already part of the initial concepts of the remake project. According to him, the Shinra soldier is important for his ability to convey a different vision of the world created by the developer.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will not change character destinies

During the interview, Hamaguchi also explained that one of the goals of the Final Fantasy VII remake was to make players tense about how the story could change. AND that was precisely why Square Enix decided to make some adjustments to the scriptsas Zack’s very presence makes evident.
