An important figure in Final Fantasy VII, but who appeared briefly in the original game, Zack Fair had a greatly expanded role in Rebirth. And, according to Square Enix, the character will have his story developed again with more details in the third part of the remake prepared by her.
In an interview with the Nintenderos website, director Naoki Hamaguchi explained that expanding the character’s presence is something that was already part of the initial concepts of the remake project. According to him, the Shinra soldier is important for his ability to convey a different vision of the world created by the developer.
“This is precisely why, in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, we incorporated him into the story in a way that maximizes his appeal.“, he explained. “And, of course, this stance will be maintained throughout the trilogy. In that regard, we hope you continue to follow Zack’s role in the story”.
Final Fantasy VII Remake will not change character destinies
During the interview, Hamaguchi also explained that one of the goals of the Final Fantasy VII remake was to make players tense about how the story could change. AND that was precisely why Square Enix decided to make some adjustments to the scriptsas Zack’s very presence makes evident.
However, the director states that this does not necessarily mean that “everything can change” According to him, from the beginning of the project it was clear that certain destinies and details could not change, as doing so would alter the central themes of the story and the emotional center of characters.
In other words, it seems that, in part 3 of Final Fantasy VII Remake, Zack Fair will continue to suffer a tragic fate. In the original game, he is shown as a companion who helps Cloud escape Shinra, but who meets a thankless end before the main events of the story begin.
He fulfilled a similar role in Rebirth, but its participation was greatly expanded. More details about its role in the final part of the narrative should be known soon, if rumors that the game will be officially revealed during Summer Game Fest 2026 are confirmed.
