“The Meta, the company that owns Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, plans to cut around 10% of its employees, which is equivalent to almost eight thousand jobs. In addition, it also intends to close six thousand open positions.

The information was released by the New York Times, which claims to have had access to an internal communication from the company to its employees. The change would be related to the company’s investment in the development of artificial intelligence.

“We are taking this measure as part of our ongoing effort to manage the company more efficiently and to allow us to offset other investments we are making,” said Janelle Gale, director of Human Resources at Meta, in the same message addressed to employees. “This is not an easy decision and will involve the departure of people who made significant contributions to Meta during their time here,” he added.

When contacted by the New York Times, a Meta spokesperson confirmed the staff cuts, but declined to comment further on the situation.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said in previous statements that he expects that in the future, much of the work in the technology sector will be carried out by artificial intelligence-based systems, including programming assistants that help write software.

Over the past few years, Meta has made some advances in the area of AI, but has lagged behind its direct competitors in developing fundamental models.

To catch up, Zuckerberg has already invested more than 70 billion dollars (almost 60 billion euros) in data centers, semiconductors and real estate.

This year, however, the planned investment could even be doubled with regard to artificial intelligence. In a conference call in January, Zuckerberg said Meta expects to spend between $115 and $135 billion this year.”
