Responsible for writing the books that inspired the A4 Games game series, Dmitry Glukhovsvy states that Metro 2039 should not be considered just a game. In X, the writer stated that he believes that the new project goes beyond that and can be treated as a true “experience” with broader impacts.
Glukhovsvy also explained that he believes that, “In times of war, stories need to reflect reality, to record it” The context of the comment is the fact that the title’s developer was a direct victim of the war between Russia and Ukraine, as it has its headquarters in the invaded country.
“Metro 2039 is that mirror. But, as expected of mirrors, you will see your own reflection when you look into it. Who are you?”, asks the author of the books. He released the first volume of his story, 2033, in March 2010 — the book was a great success by presenting a post-apocalyptic world in which what was left of humanity survives in the subways of cities like Moscow.
Metro 2039 will be the darkest chapter in the series
As A24 Games itself had already publicly confirmed, the war between Russia and Ukraine had severe impacts on the narrative of the next game. Thus, he must have even more political comments and questions about the nature of war than his predecessors, who were already doing something similar.
In Metro 2039, players will return to the Moscow underground to find out what happened after young Artyom escaped from the place. The plot will explore how the New Reich took control of the place under the leadership of the Spartan Hunter, who was an allied force in previous games.
According to Glukhosvky, the game that will hit stores is very different from its first version, which was abandoned when the recent military conflict began. For the writer, Metro 2039 can be considered the most mature story it has ever createdand has reached a point where it can no longer be described as a dystopia or as a science fiction study.
