Small businesses and regional integration guide debate on Brazilian borders

Brazilian borders as strategic spaces for sustainable and competitive development are at the center of the debate proposed by the event “Small businesses on the borders of the future” taking place on May 13th and 14th, in Brasília (DF). Promoted by Sebrae, the meeting brings together experts, public management representatives, researchers and leaders linked to regional development to discuss ways that connect entrepreneurs to the new integration dynamics in these territories.

The two days of programming will highlight the role of border regions as strategic territories of innovation, competitive integration and sustainable development in South America.

During the opening of the event, this Wednesday (13), president of Sebrae, Rodrigo Soares, highlighted the potential for growth in small business exports to South American countries.

“The idea of ​​this meeting is to build a coordinated action because we have a lot to advance in the Latin American market. The idea is to intensify the exchange of experience, allowing small businesses to be promoters of the occupation of our borders with more income, inclusion and opportunities. Furthermore, the Mercosur – European Union agreement represents the expansion of possibilities. This work on the borders will allow us to attract new markets”, he considers.

He also took advantage of the moment to reinforce the opportunities that arise with the Mercosur – European Union agreement.

On the occasion, the manager of Sebrae Nacional’s International Advisory unit, Vinicius Lages, highlighted the importance of the discussion, based on the view of border regions as strategic geopolitical assets for the country.

According to him, Brazil has structural elements and capabilities from the point of view of transforming comparative advantages into competitive advantages.

“In food production, the country can grow much more, as well as in the area of ​​bio-inputs, energy transition and critical minerals that place the country within the perspective of the new economy”, he reflected.

The first day of the event began with the presence of Minister João Carlos Parkinson, head of the Infrastructure Integration Division (DINF), Department of Regional Integration and Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and Pedro Silva Barros – planning and research technician at the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea). They participated in the panel “Integration, Infrastructure and development of border regions”, moderated by the analyst from the International Advisory unit, Getúlio Vaz.

In addition to presenting a current overview of the changes undergone by Brazilian borders in recent decades, Minister Parkinson drew attention to the importance of logistics in the geopolitical context. As an example, he cited the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, which impacts the price of oil.

“Reality is changing and we have to work to strengthen our regional integration, which enables better conditions for citizens and businesspeople”, he emphasized.

Also in the morning, the panel “Integration Strategies, Financing and National Policies: Opportunities for the Development of Borders” was held, with the participation of Marcelo Shinkoda, head of the Regional Integration Division at the Secretariat of International Affairs and Development, linked to the Ministry of Planning and Budget; Vitarque Lucas Coelho, General Coordinator of Territory Management (CGGT) of the Ministry of Regional Integration and Development and Eduardo Café, Senior Specialist in IDB Operations.

During the afternoon, the program features the presentation of Sebrae System actions in the states of Roraima, Paraná, Amapá, Acre, Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso. Thursday (14) will be marked by the presentation of Experiences from the Entrepreneurial Territories Program in the Border Region and workshops on topics related to public policies for small businesses, opportunities for territorial development, governance and business.

One of the participants in the meeting is Sebrae Acre analyst Marcos Maciente, who works in the business environment development unit. “We understand that working on entrepreneurship in these border regions provides opportunities for growth, work, and increases income for people who live in the Amazon biome”, he pointed out.
