This is GTA 6: an 80-hour story, 3x bigger map than Red Dead 2, and cops that remember your face

Emphasis Gamer

Rockstar premiered a 26-minute Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay showcase on Netflix, then opened the floodgates on preview coverage from outlets flown to Rockstar North last month. The game is enormous: a map that’s three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s, an 80-hour playthrough, more than 600,000 NPC animations, and gameplay design that aims to shift away from consequence-free sandbox chaos. The video hits YouTube tonight.

After three years of trailers and delays, Rockstar finally showed Grand Theft Auto VI actually being played. The unusual 26-minute “Extended Look” premiered on Netflix hours before it lands on YouTube.

The footage was captured on a base PlayStation 5 and looks amazingly detailed. Alongside it, previews went live from journalists and creators who spent time at Rockstar North last month, and between the two there is more concrete information about GTA 6 than we have had since the game was announced in 2022. Here is what actually matters.

The scale

Co-studio head at Rockstar North, Rob Nelson, gave YouTuber TGG a set of figures during the preview event: the map is roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s. Vice City alone is about twice the size of Los Santos. Rockstar maps have never been the biggest in gaming, but they have generally been the most detailed.

Nelson also told The New York Times that his own recent playthrough took about 80 hours, covering the main story plus some optional objectives that carry narrative consequences. For reference, Red Dead Redemption 2’s story runs roughly 50 to 60 hours. If that holds, GTA 6 is comfortably the longest game Rockstar has shipped.

Crime now has a paper trail

A most substantive change is that GTA 6 wants you to “think like a criminal” rather than a wrecking ball. The wanted system has been rebuilt around information. A crime has to be witnessed by an NPC or picked up by an alarm before police are alerted, and responding officers get a description: your face, your clothes, your vehicle.

The HUD shows separate indicators for which of those details the police actually know. Hollow wanted stars mean they are searching but do not have a description. Shedding heat means invalidating those descriptions. Changing your hairstyle clears your appearance. Putting on sunglasses or a different hat does not – you need a full outfit change, which is why trunk storage for spare clothes is now a functional system.

Wearing a mask during the job and taking it off afterward can prevent the police from ever learning your face, even with CCTV present. Ditching a recognized car for another one lowers attention. If the cops know they are chasing a couple, Jason and Lucia can split up to divide the response.

The six-star wanted level is back after GTA 5 capped out at five. Escaping at three stars or higher inside Vice City is reportedly brutal because the streets are narrow and the traffic is dense.

The Criminal Profile

Rockstar’s replacement for RDR 2’s honor meter is called the Criminal Profile, and the distinction is professional versus sloppy. Nelson says the goal is for the player not to feel overpowered the way they did in previous games. The system can evaluate how you behave as a criminal, for example, robbing a store without killing anybody and escaping cleanly can raises your ‘Criminal Profile’ because you committed the crime professionally, while excessive violence lowers it.

Other people in Leonida are armed, dangerous and occasionally violent without provocation. You can also incapacitate enemies without killing them, by wounding a limb or shooting the weapon out of their hands.

Stealing cars is a system now, too. You cannot just press a button. Vehicles are sorted into security tiers, and a phone app called WAINK scans a car before you commit, reporting its value, lock status, alarm and whether it has a tracker.

Older cars open with a slim jim, while modern luxury vehicles need key-cloning hardware you unlock through story progression, meaning some cars are simply off-limits early on. Cars with GPS trackers phone your position to the police unless you outrun the signal or dump the vehicle.

Selling happens through specialized fences, Red Dead 2-style, and damaged cars are worth less. Money matters more broadly this time: some story progression requires raising specific amounts of cash first.

The world

Rockstar claims more than 600,000 NPC animations, against roughly 55,000 in GTA 5 and 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2. NPCs are individually art-directed rather than assembled procedurally, with a wider spread of body types, and animations scale to fit them.

The phone is now a physical object in the world rather than a HUD overlay. Snapmatic returns as the Instagram parody, but Jason and Lucia cannot post (they are fugitives avoiding a digital trail), so you browse and observe rather than participate. Fast travel is handled by a rideshare app called Ryde Me, and you can hold full conversations with other passengers.

Jason and Lucia’s relationship is a genuine variable. They start out interested in each other, but the romance only develops if you invest in it – shopping, working out, exploring, robbing places together. Rockstar says a stronger romance grants no bonuses, which is a more confident design choice than it sounds. The story completes either way.

On the automotive side, the footage showed a convertibles, muscle cars, Japanese tuners straight out of The Fast and the Furious, an actual closed-circuit race with a full field, and dirt bike racing.

The performance question

Rockstar has yet to confirm frame rate targets or performance modes. Content creator Davy Jones, who attended the preview, says the base PS5 build currently runs at 30 fps, and the Extended Look footage appears to be consistent with that. Whether PS5 Pro gets a higher-frame-rate mode remains unknown.

GTA VI launches November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles at $80 for the base game and $100 for the apparently more popular Ultimate Edition. No PC version has been confirmed so far.
