The music streaming platform Tidal will start identifying songs created with artificial intelligence and will stop paying royalties for reproductions of tracks entirely generated by the technology. The new policy comes into force on July 15th and also applies to Tidal Upload, the company’s platform aimed at independent artists.
According to the streaming service, songs produced entirely or substantially with AI must be identified. Initially, the requirement will apply to works entirely generated by artificial intelligence. The company says it will expand the rule to songs partially produced with AI as detection systems become more reliable.
The main change, however, is the ban on paying royalties for tracks entirely produced by artificial intelligence. According to Tidal, the priority is to ensure that remuneration goes to works “produced, written and performed by people”.
Tidal also said it will remove content associated with fraudulent activity, such as songs that imitate well-known artists or attempt to mislead listeners about the authorship of the recordings.
In a statement, the platform stated that artists should be free to use artificial intelligence tools, but that users also need to know when they are consuming this type of content.
Singer Jay-Z acquired Tidal in 2015, and although he sold a majority stake in the company to Jack Dorsey’s Block in 2021, he and other artists who were original shareholders still maintain minority stakes.
