The research department at the University of Tennessee, in the United States, filed a lawsuit against artificial intelligence giant Anthropic in Delaware federal court for alleged infringement of its patents related to neural networks.
The lawsuit filed by the University of Tennessee Research Foundation, filed on Monday (20) and released this Tuesday (21), alleges that Anthropic’s AI systems violate its patents on neuroscience-inspired machine learning technology.
The lawsuit is believed to be the first patent infringement case against Anthropic. On Monday, a federal judge in California approved the company’s historic $1.5 billion settlement in a copyright class action lawsuit brought by a group of authors over the use of their works to train AI.
“Anthropic’s cavalier approach to third-party intellectual property rights in the development of its products goes beyond the use of copyrighted material,” the university said in its lawsuit.
Spokespeople for Anthropic and the university did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The Knoxville, Tennessee-based educational institution argued that Anthropic’s systems infringe on two patents covering “significant contributions to the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, neuromorphic computing and neuroscience-inspired computing” invented by its professors.
The institution asked the court for compensation for material damages of an unspecified amount and an injunction preventing Anthropic from infringing its patents.
