Electric bicycles signed by automakers have already become common in the market, especially when they are launched in partnership with car models. Given this scenario, Volkswagen seeks to differentiate its new e-bike by investing in a set of safety-oriented features, including a rear camera, radar blind spot warning, intelligent lighting and a helmet with features inspired by the equipment used by fighter pilots.
TheVolkswagen eBike is produced by the company n+the same manufacturer responsible for Mercedes-AMG electric bicycles, including models linked to the brand’s and Petronas’ Formula 1 teams. According to Volkswagen, the bicycle’s main difference is not its speed or range, but rather the safety offered to the cyclist.
Rear camera allows you to follow traffic without looking back
- The bike’s main feature is a camera mounted on the rear of the fender, designed to provide a wide view of traffic behind the rider;
- The images are transmitted to a screen positioned on the handlebars, allowing the user to follow what is happening behind the bike with minimal head movement;
- In addition to the camera, the e-bike has a radar-based blind spot warning system. The feature identifies vehicles approaching the bicycle and issues warnings to the cyclist when it detects a risk situation;
- Volkswagen also invested in resources to make the bicycle more visible to other road users;
- An LED strip installed on the top tube of the frame signals the cyclist’s actions, while the Volkswagen logo on the rear functions as a brake light. According to the manufacturer, both remain visible even during the day.
The bike will be offered in two versions: Sport and crossover. In the Crossover configuration, there is a cargo tray installed at the rear, where the LED turn signal lights are positioned.
Smart helmet detects accidents and sends messages
The most technological component of the set is the Smart Helmet. Equipped with LED lighting synchronized with the bicycle, it automatically replicates the braking and turn signals emitted by the e-bike.
The accessory also incorporates an accelerometer capable of detecting accidents. If a fall is identified, the system automatically sends a text message to the emergency contacts registered by the user.
Smart glasses work as a head-up display
Volkswagen also offers Smart Glasses developed to work in conjunction with the Smart Helmet. The glasses act as a head-up display (HUD), displaying real-time information about the bike, such as speed, range, navigation data and safety alerts.
If the rear camera detects an approaching vehicle, for example, the cyclist receives the warning both on the screen installed on the handlebars and directly on the glasses.
According to the product description, the experience is comparable to wearing a fighter pilot’s helmet, but adapted to cycling.
Prices start at R$22,100
Volkswagen sells the versions Sport and crossover with a starting price of R$ 22.1 thousand. Currently, both include the rear camera Smart View at no additional cost. Anyone wishing to purchase the Smart Helmet will need to pay more R$ 2 thousand. Smart Glasses with head-up display cost R$ 2.5 thousand additional. The autonomy extender, available exclusively for the version crossoveris sold by R$ 3.8 thousand.
With this set of equipment, Volkswagen is betting on a package aimed mainly at cyclist safety, although the technological resources significantly increase the final cost of the electric bicycle.
