The WhatsApp recently announced that its customers’ profiles will soon include usernames. The new feature has not yet been implemented, but the platform has just started the first stage: reserving these names.
The functionality allows you to create a unique identifier for the account, using which it will be possible to start conversations and add people to groups without having their cell phone number. This prevents personal contact exposure to strangers.
The platform stated that it will also make searching for people by identifier available in 2026, which already occurs in other messaging applications such as Telegram. To have a usernameyou will not need to pay. At least as far as we know.
What is known about WhasApp name reservation
For now, it is not possible to view third-party usernames or start conversations using them on WhatsApp. Only free reservation of a unique account identifier is available, in the format @Name123.
By default, anyone who has access to your username will be able to contact you on WhatsApp. To avoid unwanted messages and calls, the platform also created keys that work like four-digit passwords to start a conversation.
It is not yet possible to guarantee that all profiles with usernames actually match the people they claim to be. So far, what has been announced is the future and possible reclaiming of so-called “high-profile names”, such as those of famous people and companies.
