Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold is announced with Evangelion crossover and arrives in 2027

Square Enix has officially revealed Evercoldthe new expansion of Final Fantasy XIV Onlineduring the Fan Festival 2026 held in Anaheim. The update marks the beginning of a new narrative arc called “Godless Realms Saga” and is scheduled to arrive in January 2027.

The announcement was made by producer and director Naoki Yoshida, who also presented a teaser highlighting the Warrior of Light’s upcoming challenges in a new world known as “The Fourth”. The expansion promises profound changes to the combat system, new content and even new collaborations.

New narrative arc and gameplay changes

Evercold will begin a new phase within the MMORPG, following the events of previous expansions. One of the main highlights is the reformulation of the battle system, which will be divided into two distinct modes:

  • Reborn Mode: maintains the current base of combat and job mechanics
  • Evolved Mode: brings greater depth and identity to each class

According to Yoshida, the new jobs introduced in the expansion will only be available in Evolved mode, reinforcing the proposal to renew the gameplay experience.

Additionally, the expansion will include:

  • Two new jobs (tank and physical ranged DPS)
  • Increased level cap from 100 to 110
  • New cities and explorable areas
  • New dungeons, trials and raids
  • A new Ultimate Raid
  • Updates to PvP and crafting systems

Crossover with Evangelion is one of the highlights

One of the most eye-catching announcements was the collaboration with Neon Genesis Evangelion. The crossover, titled “EVANGELION: Ghosts of Desire”will be presented as a series of alliance raids within the expansion.

The partnership will be developed together with the khara studio, responsible for the franchise, and promises to bring visual and narrative elements inspired by the anime, which is known for its complex approach and striking aesthetics.

Structural updates and system improvements

Evercold it will also introduce significant changes to the game’s structure. Among the main new features are:

  • Seasons System: new form of progression and rewards
  • Armory Update: facilitates switching between jobs
  • More character customization options

These improvements are part of an ongoing effort by Square Enix to modernize the game’s design and make it more accessible to veterans and new players alike.

Free Trial expansion and Switch 2 version

Another relevant announcement was the Free Trial expansion of Final Fantasy XIV, which will now include the expansion Shadowbringers. With this, players will be able to access an even greater amount of content without time limits, totaling hundreds of hours of gameplay.

Furthermore, a version of the game for the Nintendo Switch 2scheduled for August 2026. The new platform will have an early access period for testing before the official launch.

Roadmap to expansion

Square Enix also detailed the update schedule leading up to Evercold, including the 7.5x series patches:

  • Patch 7.5 (April 28): new quests and trial
  • Patch 7.51 (June 2): new area and Ultimate raid
  • Patch 7.55 (July 28): additional content and quests
  • Patch 7.56 (September 8): Introduction to Beastmaster
