The Apple announced on Wednesday, 8, a new multi-year agreement with Broadcom to design and produce custom silicon components and advanced wireless connectivity technologies for a wide range of the company’s products. The commitment, which is expected to exceed US$30 billion, foresees the manufacturing of more than 15 billion chips in the United States and the creation of hundreds of jobs in the country.
As part of the partnership, Broadcom will expand and modernize its Fort Collins, Colorado facility with an investment of $1.5 billion in capital expenditures. The factory will produce advanced radio frequency components, including FBAR filters, which eliminate signal interference, as well as wireless connectivity technologies used in Apple devices.
According to the company, the agreement represents the largest commitment ever made within the Apple American Manufacturing Program (AMP), an initiative launched last year to accelerate manufacturing in the US and strengthen a domestic supply chain for semiconductors. Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook thanked US President Donald Trump and his government for supporting the project.
The initiative is part of Apple’s plan to invest US$600 billion in the American economy over four years, focusing on manufacturing, job creation and technological development.
At 8:42 am (Brasília time), in the New York pre-market, Apple fell 0.31%. Broadcom, which briefly operated in positive territory shortly after the announcement, fell 0.75%.
